Micro-Generation

Alberta's Micro-Generation Regulation allows homeowners, small business owners, and farm operators to generate their own renewable energy to offset consumption while staying connected to the electrical grid. Any excess electricity produced is sent back to the grid, earning a credit toward future bills. The credit rate for excess power generation is pre-negotiated with your energy retailer and can vary depending on your provider.

Net Metering

The BC Hydro Net-Metering program allows for a generation capacity of up to 100kW. Your smart meter monitors both the electricity you use from BC Hydro and any excess power you send back to the grid. Any surplus energy is credited to your next bill, and if you have remaining credits on your anniversary date, you’ll receive a payment based on the current market price.

The Fortis BC Net-Metering program enables residential and commercial customers to generate renewable energy and reduce their electricity costs. A dedicated meter tracks both the energy consumed and any surplus sent to the grid, with excess energy credited for future bills. To participate, customers must use renewable sources like solar or wind, install equipment on-site, and ensure the system’s generating capacity does not exceed 50 kW.

The District of Summerland’s Distributed Generation Program allows residential customers with small, renewable or low-carbon energy systems (such as solar or wind) up to 30kW to connect to the Summerland Distribution System. This program offers a net-metering option, enabling customers to offset their annual electricity usage, with any surplus energy purchased by the District at the wholesale rate.

The City of Penticton’s Net-Metering program allows customers to install renewable energy systems like wind, hydro, solar, or geothermal to generate electricity on their property. Customers will receive retail value credits for the energy they produce with systems up to a 50kW capacity. Any excess energy generated is credited back at the applicable rate for their class code each month.

Energy, Energy Conservation and the ICE Fund Tax

Under the latest rebate program, materials and equipment designed for energy conservation—such as those preventing heat loss from buildings—are exempt from the Provincial Sales Tax (PST). This includes solar photovoltaic collector panels, as well as the wiring, controllers, and devices that convert direct current into alternating current, provided they are purchased alongside the solar panels. This PST exemption encourages BC residents to make environmentally conscious upgrades and energy-efficient choices in their homes.
